cPanel & WHM 56 and the Internal Perl upgrade: 5.22

In cPanel & WHM version 56 we updated the internal version (and only the internal version) of Perl from 5.14 to 5.22. This has a couple of potential consequences that we want to make sure our users are aware of. Memory use, and dormant mode processes Memory use is always a concern in server environments, and we have worked very hard to ensure that the upgrades have had minimal effect on your environment. With our first release of version 56 …

Show Off Your cPanel University Skills

A few weeks ago, we told you about some exciting updates and changes we recently made to cPanel University, and the response from the cPanel community has been nothing short of exciting. As I was going through the new system myself, I stumbled on a feature that was really exciting to me. I am a bit of a LinkedIn junkie, and I accidentally discovered that with just a few clicks, …

I just want a site

While talking with our partners one day, one of them said something that other users and partners confirmed repeatedly: “Customers close down their accounts for a few reasons”, the partner reported, “but the biggest one is that they just simply never got started.” They. Never. Got. Started. For many end users, they simply want to get online. Installing and managing WordPress, Drupal, or other content management systems vastly over-serves this demographic. They have very simple …

Class is in Session: The New cPanel University

Thousands of corporations and companies, and even more individuals, use the suite of tools loaded inside of cPanel & WHM to power their business and manage their online presence. From mail and spam filtering, to database storage and security, to simply just launching a website, cPanel and WHM offers a wealth of technical offerings. That being said, we’ve heard from our customers for years that they’d like a resource; a place where they …

The cPanel Development Process

One of the most common things seen on the features site is users asking for a feature request to be added to the next version of cPanel. While we do evaluate each request for inclusion in the version currently being developed, too many variable requests come through for us to include all of them. Today we wanted to talk a bit about what happens to the ones that aren’t picked up for inclusion in the …

Updated deprecation schedule for X3

Back in September 2015, we announced the impending deprecation of X3, the previous generation user interface for cPanel. Since doing so we’ve seen adoption of Paper Lantern sky-rocket. After significant feedback from our customers and stakeholders we’re revising the deprecation schedule. Originally we said that we would stop shipping the X3 theme with v58, but in our development planning meeting yesterday we decided to delay that to v60, which is a delay of 4 months …

Shh! This Service is Sleeping! Dormant Mode in cPanel & WHM version 56

When you’re running a cPanel & WHM server, you want to make sure that you get the most bang out of every bit of memory you can. To help you do this, cPanel & WHM version 56 will include additional settings to reduce unnecessary memory consumption. We’ve expanded and improved the dormant mode setting that’s available for cPanel & WHM services. Services enter dormant mode when they’ve been idle for a set amount of time, …

Password Reset for All

A key feature that has been requested by cPanel Server Administrators, cPanel Users, and End Users (Webmail, FTP, Web Disk) alike, has been the ability to reset passwords without the need for Administrator or Account Owner intervention. We have recently revamped the Password Reset process to enhance its capabilities and extend them to allow Subaccounts to reset their passwords via a self-service process. This means that Webmail, FTP, and Web Disk accounts that have been …

PHP 7 Is Here!

One of our most requested features is for PHP 7 support.  We’ve heard you loud and clear, and over the last few weeks we’ve been working to bring PHP 7 to EasyApache.  I’d like to announce that it is now available in our primary EA4 repositories. PHP 7 brings a lot of improvements to the table. One of the most notable changes are the speed improvements gained from PHPNG, the newly refactored Zend Engine …

We’re Moving to Perl 5.22 in cPanel & WHM Version 56

If you use custom code on your cPanel & WHM servers, please read this message! Without further action on your part, your custom code may break in cPanel & WHM version 56. In version 56, we will compile the cPanel & WHM binaries against Perl version 5.22. Previously, we compiled binaries against Perl 5.14.4. Because of this, the upgrade to Perl 5.22 may cause problems with any custom Perl code that you execute from cPanel …
